Hanse 370e Wins Class in Scottish 3 Peaks May 2008 19 May 2008
Aquasmart a Hanse 370e took part in the Scottish 3 Peaks race starting at Oban on Friday the 16th of May via Salon, Jura, Arran to finish at Troon a total of 196 sea miles with Benmore, The Paps of Jura and Goatfell being run by Mike Whitford and Colwyn Jones, leaving the sailing for Clive Davis, Gordon McGeorge and Andrew Forgie.
Aquasmart was the second smallest boat in its class (Class 2) but managed to win through over much larger boats. The winds were very variable in both strength and direction, but with constant sheet trimming by Andrew allowed to get the best performance from the boat. On the first mountain Mike became ill but continued for the sake of the team and was able to recover for the rest of the runs.
Amazingly there was some close racing especially in the early hours of Saturday morning with Lark a 45' yacht and that continued until Jura. After rounding the Mull it was a dead beat to Lamlash taking 9 hours to arrive in no wind.
On the final leg to Troon a tacking dual commenced with a Beneteau 50 where Aquasmart lost out by 2 minutes.
Aquasmart won its Class and finished 4th overall losing out to 2 Trimarans and the Beneteau 50. The coincidence is that Aquasmart's boat number for the race was 4.
